Is it safe to see a chiropractor through pregnancy?

Reports show that 50% of women experience back pain during pregnancy, but only 1 in 5 of those women seek chiropractic care to help alleviate their discomfort (1). If you’re holding back from seeking treatment, or simply wondering if it’s an option, you might be asking: is it safe to continue (or start) seeing a chiropractor while pregnant?

The short answer is yes, chiropractic treatment is considered safe and effective during pregnancy (2). Changes common during pregnancy, such as shift in centre of gravity and increased back curve, pelvic changes and postural adaptations can lead to misalignments in your spine, causing pain and discomfort. Your chiropractor can help to stabilise and balance the pelvis.

This is important not only for reducing pain during pregnancy, but preparing your body for giving birth as well. Pelvic misalignment can obstruct your baby’s growing space and can also make delivery harder, as it may stop your baby moving into the proper birthing position (3). So not only is chiropractic care generally safe during pregnancy, it can also be very beneficial.

Treatment at Realign Health Clinic

Our trained practitioners understand the specific needs of pregnant patients (1), utilise various gentle techniques during your treatment and modify techniques throughout different stages of pregnancy, from pre-conception to post-partum care.

Your treatment will usually be made up of low force adjustments, such as mobilisation, soft tissue releases, instrument adjusting and blocking techniques to help unwind the pelvis and ensure the safety of both mum and bub.

Studies have also shown that a variety of nonpharmacological treatments can also help during pregnancy. Along with manual therapy, this includes exercise such as yoga, acupuncture and mindfulness (4).

That’s why, at Realign Health Clinic, your treatment plan extends past hands-on care. We also provide stretches, exercises, information on baby’s optimal positioning, a discussion of braces, belly bands and postural supports, as well as nutritional advice. Plus, we’re here to support you emotionally through this journey!

When chiropractic care might not be right

Generally speaking, chiropractic care is considered very safe, including during pregnancy. However, there may be some circumstances when you may need to consult your physician before seeing your chiropractor.

If you’re experiencing:

  • vaginal bleeding

  • placenta previa or placenta abruption

  • ectopic pregnancy

  • moderate to severe toxaemia

make sure you speak to your doctor before undergoing any kind of physical treatment, including chiropractic (3)

We love being part of your health journey and your birth story. So whether you’re currently pregnant or planning to try soon, consider having a chiropractor on your birthing team and give us a call.
